Social Media Reach Calculator

How many people do your posts actually reach, measured against the audience you have — and what does that reach cost when you pay for it?

Reach rate

Share of your followers who saw the content.

Where that sits by platform

Facebook 5–7 % LinkedIn 5–15 % Instagram 20–40 % YouTube 20–60 % TikTok / Reels 50–150 %+

Reach vs impressions: what this calculator actually divides

The reach rate sets the impressions on a piece of content against the size of your audience: how many people did this reach, measured against the following I have? At 100 % the post earned as many impressions as you have followers; above that, the algorithm carried it beyond your own audience. One honest caveat before you read the number. Strictly, reach counts unique people while impressions count every display, and the two only coincide at a frequency of one — formally, reach = impressions ÷ frequency. This calculator takes impressions, because that is the figure every platform reports. For organic posts frequency sits close to one and the approximation holds; for paid delivery with repeat exposure it overstates true reach, so read the result as an upper bound.

Reach rate (%) = impressions ÷ followers × 100

Add your ad spend and the calculator also returns the CPM — cost per 1,000 impressions: CPM = ad spend ÷ impressions × 1,000. So you see not only how far you reached, but what that reach cost.

How to calculate reach from impressions and followers

A post with 3,000 impressions on a 10,000-follower account:

Impressions3,000
Followers10,000
3,000 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 30 %

30 % is unremarkable for an Instagram feed post. If it takes off — through shares or an Explore placement — the rate can pass 100 %, at which point it is reaching people who do not follow you.

A good reach rate is one where over 100 % is possible

Reach rate varies enormously by platform and format, and the ceiling differs even more than the average. The bar above places your result; here are the ranges:

Facebook 5–7 %
LinkedIn 5–15 %
Instagram feed 20–40 %
YouTube 20–60 %
TikTok / Reels 50–150 %+ (For You discovery)

Anything above 100 % means the content travelled beyond your own following — routine on TikTok and Reels, where distribution is not tied to your follower count at all.

Organic reach and paid reach are the same number bought differently

Reach arrives two ways: organically, when the algorithm distributes your content for free, or paid, when you buy impressions through promotion or ads. For purely organic reach the CPM is zero — its real price sits in production time and community work, which no calculator will show you. The moment budget is involved, CPM makes bought reach comparable across platforms. The advertiser's side of the same figure is the CPM calculator.

Timing, format and what the algorithm rewards

  • Post when your audience is awake: the algorithm tests new posts on a small group in the first minutes. Early interaction decides whether it goes wider, so the posting time is not cosmetic.
  • Use the format the platform is pushing: platforms favour formats in waves. Short video currently earns systematically more organic reach than static images, even on small accounts.
  • Optimise for shares and saves, not likes: most algorithms weight forwarding and saving above liking. Content with a clear reason to keep or pass on gets carried beyond your own audience, which is exactly what lifts the rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is reach rate?
Reach rate shows how many people your content reached relative to the size of your audience. The formula is reach rate (%) = impressions ÷ followers × 100. For example, 3,000 impressions on a 10,000-follower account gives 30 % — typical for an Instagram feed post. Rates above 100 % happen when the algorithm distributes the content beyond your own following.
What is the difference between reach and impressions?
Reach counts unique people; impressions count every display, including repeat views by the same person. Formally, reach = impressions ÷ frequency, so the two coincide only when frequency is one. This calculator takes impressions because that is what platforms report — for organic posts the approximation holds well, while for paid delivery with repeat exposure it overstates true reach.
Can reach be higher than the follower count?
Yes, and on successful posts it is the norm. As soon as the algorithm shows content to non-followers — through Explore, For You or shares — reach exceeds the follower count and the rate passes 100 %. Rates well above 100 % indicate content that travelled beyond your core audience.
What is a good CPM for creators?
It depends heavily on platform, format and audience country. Rough guidance for paid promotion: Meta and Instagram often $5–15, TikTok $3–10, YouTube $10–25, LinkedIn $20–50. For purely organic reach the CPM is arithmetically zero — the actual cost sits in your production and community effort.
