What is CPM? Cost per mille and the CPM formula

Your CPM (cost per mille, also written cost per thousand impressions) is what a campaign costs you for every 1,000 impressions served. For an advertiser it is the one figure that makes reach comparable across platforms — TikTok, Meta or LinkedIn. A lower CPM buys cheaper visibility; whether that visibility is worth anything depends on click-through rate, conversion rate and creative quality.

CPM = ad spend ÷ impressions × 1,000

How to calculate CPM: a worked example

A Meta campaign with a $450 budget and 60,000 impressions:

Ad spend$450
Impressions60,000
450 ÷ 60,000 × 1,000 = $7.50

What is a good CPM? Average CPM rates by platform

CPM ranges from roughly $4 to well above $60 depending on the platform, so a single universal benchmark would be misleading. Rough guidance for awareness and reach objectives:

Platform USD EUR
TikTok $4–10 €4–9
Instagram / Facebook $8–15 €7.50–14
LinkedIn $25–60 €23–55

Figures in USD and EUR; CHF pricing tends to run about 5 % higher.

CPM swings sharply with target market, season (Q4 often +25–60 %) and campaign objective. Treat the table as orientation, not as a target.

CPM vs CPC: turning cost per mille into an effective click price

CPM and CPC are not rival strategies but two ways of being billed for the same thing, and your expected click-through rate is what makes them comparable. The effective CPC = CPM ÷ (10 × CTR): at a $7.50 CPM and a 1 % CTR you are effectively paying $0.75 per click. Buying on CPM wins when your creatives earn an above-average click-through rate — then you pick up clicks more cheaply than you would by bidding for them directly. Below that line, paying per click is the safer deal. Enter your expected CTR above to see where you land, and compare it in the CPC calculator.

CPM advertising in practice: when to buy reach instead of clicks

  • Never read CPM in isolation: a cheap CPM says nothing about quality — always read it alongside click-through rate and conversion rate. The lowest CPM rarely produces the best return on ad spend.
  • Plan for Q4 and seasonality: holiday season and Black Friday push CPM up across every vertical. Test early, in Q2 or Q3, rather than starting in Q4 at peak cost.
  • Compare platforms on more than price: LinkedIn CPM is structurally higher than TikTok, and that is normal. What matters is whether the premium is justified by audience quality and conversion rate.

Background & sources

CPM varies widely by platform, objective and season (Q4 markedly higher) — the figures above are orientation, not guarantees.

Frequently asked questions

CPM meaning: what does CPM stand for?
CPM stands for cost per mille — the cost of 1,000 impressions of an ad, where mille is Latin for thousand. The term comes from media planning for TV, print and radio and is now the standard unit for online and social advertising. Formula: CPM = ad spend ÷ impressions × 1,000. Example: $450 spent on 60,000 impressions gives a CPM of $7.50.
How do you calculate CPM?
Divide total ad spend by the number of impressions and multiply by 1,000: CPM = ad spend ÷ impressions × 1,000. With a $450 budget and 60,000 impressions that is $7.50. The figure shows how efficiently you are buying reach, regardless of whether that reach turns into clicks or conversions.
What is a good CPM?
Rough guidance: TikTok around $3–8, Instagram and Facebook around $7–15, LinkedIn around $20–50. CPM varies sharply with target market, season (Q4 often +25–60 %) and campaign objective. A low CPM on its own is not a quality signal — it has to be read together with click-through rate and conversion rate.
How are CPM, CTR and ROAS related?
CPM measures how efficiently you buy reach. A cheap CPM is worthless if click-through rate or conversion rate are weak. Read together: CPM is the price of visibility, CTR tells you whether the creative is relevant, and conversion rate tells you whether the landing page delivers.
